In this chapter we introduce you to the concepts of spatial reference systems, geoids, spheroids, coordinate systems, projections and datums.
We provide exercises on how to determine the spatial reference system of a foreign piece of geographic data. We also demonstrate how to select suitable spatial reference systems to store your data.
In this chapter we also show case the new PostGIS geography data type which is very similar to the SQL Server 2008 geography geodetic data type.
